An independent online career counsellor is a practitioner who sells 1:1 sessions directly to students or professionals over video or chat, sets their own fee, and collects payment before the call, without working through a franchise or an agency.

What that session contains is one of three things, and mixing them up is the fastest way to underprice.

Guidance. A 45 to 60 minute conversation about a stream, a course, a college or a job switch. This is what most independents start with, and it is what a single-session price covers.

Assessment plus guidance. The client takes an aptitude or interest test, and you interpret it in one or more sessions. Companies bundle this into their packages. It costs you more time, so it should cost the client more.

A roadmap. A written plan over several weeks, usually with follow-up sessions. This is the premium tier, and it is where the larger prices in the next section come from.

Decide which one you sell first. Selling all three on day one gives a buyer a menu to compare instead of a reason to book.

What career counsellors in India charge

As of 29 September 2026, published career counselling session fees in India run from about ₹700 an hour (a marketplace estimate) to ₹5,000 (one consultancy's range), and multi-session packages run from about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 or more.

One common mistake is reading Toprankers' ₹1,500 to ₹20,000 as a per-session price. That range covers all types of service, from one call to a full programme, and the page does not split it by session.

We read the raw pages of eight fee sources on 29 September 2026. Here is what each one actually says, and what it does not.

Four things stand out.

First, single-session evidence clusters in the low thousands. UrbanPro's hourly estimate starts at ₹700, NT Consultant's single sessions run ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, and Lume Live puts the upper end for independents at ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. One small practice publishes ₹2,999 for an assessment plus a live session.

Second, there are three price bands. Marketplace hours and single sessions sit between about ₹700 and ₹3,000. Short packages cluster between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000. Full programmes from established firms run ₹19,999 to ₹30,000 and beyond.

Third, most packages bundle an assessment. Mindler's Explore plan, every Career Counselling Online plan and Career Domain's packages include a test. Two rules that hold up whatever number you choose:

• Price the session, not the hour. "60 minutes for ₹1,500" invites a discount request for 30 minutes. "One career clarity session, with a written summary, ₹1,500" does not.
• Start at the low end and raise the price when your calendar fills. A price you can raise is easier than one you have to cut.

What that looks like in a month

How to get paid for online counselling

Once someone says yes, three things have to happen: they pick a time, they pay, and you both get the meeting link. Most Indian counsellors start by doing all three by hand, in a chat.

A bare payment link fixes the money. It leaves the scheduling, the intake and the meeting link with you. If you take three sessions a week that is fine. At ten a week it is an evening of admin.

It gave a sensible roadmap on qualifications, niche and Google Meet, but named no platform for taking bookings or payment. Four mistakes that cost new counsellors clients

Selling a certificate, not an outcome. A client wants to know what changes after the session. "Shortlist of three courses and a plan for the next 30 days" sells. A list of qualifications does not.

Promising results. Do not guarantee a college seat, a job or a score. You cannot control any of them, and a promise you cannot keep is the fastest way to lose a referral.

Treating a mental-health problem as a career problem. Some students who come for career advice are dealing with anxiety or pressure at home. Know when to refer them to a licensed mental-health professional, and say so in your intake form.

Skipping the written summary. A one-page recap after each session is cheap, and it is what a parent forwards to a relative. It is the best marketing you will do.
